| Along the east wall, left side as you enter the room, is rural Ontario. In several areas there are outcroppings of the Niagara Escarpment, separated by farmland. Both CN and CP rural stations are featured in this area. You'll find one of the old resort hotels, typical of the earlier part of this country. Nearby is a small hydroelectric generating plant beside a dammed-up lake. The main rail focus of the area is a three track interchange yard at Aberfoyle Junction, where the CN and CP tracks cross each other. Freight cars from one company can be exchanged with the other at this point. |
Officially, this is a CPR yard, so a CP switch engine is kept at the engine house. At the crossing itself, you can see the old style semaphore signals. These do work, and an engineer has to hold his train until the blade goes up to indicate it is safe to cross. The double track is the CNR, and the single track is the CPR. Occasionally you might see CN and CP exchange a passenger car, too. People going to resorts often used to charter a car, which would be switched from train to train as needed to reach its destination. |
